Rental Markets a Year After Our America’s Rental Housing Report

In early 2022, when the Center released its last biennial America’s Rental Housing report, demand for rental housing was surging, rents had risen dramatically, vacancy rates were at 40-year lows, and many lower-income renters struggled to pay the rent. Today, however, there are signs that demand has slowed and rents have stopped rising (and may even be falling in some areas). At the same time, many lower-income renters still struggle to pay the rent, especially because pandemic-related assistance programs have ended. In this talk, Whitney Airgood-Obrycki, a Senior Research Associate at the Center and lead author of the report, will discuss the current state of rental housing in the US.
