On the Move: Are Millennials Leading a Back-to-the-City Movement or Moving to the Suburbs?
Location: Online only
Speaker(s): Hyojung Lee
In the past decade, there has been a great deal of speculation about whether millennials have led a back-to-the-city movement or whether, like previous generations, they have been moving to the suburbs. In this talk, Hyojung Lee, an assistant professor at Seoul National University, will discuss a forthcoming article (co-authored with Whitney Airgood-Obrycki and Riordan Frost) examining this question. Lee, a former postdoctoral fellow at the Center, will discuss how millennial locations changed in the US from 2011-2021, a 10-year span that began during the Great Recession and ended in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. He will also compare millennials’ decisions about where to live and when to move to those of earlier generations.
