The Changing Nature of First-Time Homebuyers, 1997-2015

In this talk, Shannon will discuss a new research project examining the characteristics of today’s first-time homebuyers and documenting how the profile of first-time homebuyers has shifted over the past two decades. The project, which draws on a unique dataset from the American Housing Survey, is also looking at the relationship between changes in first-time homebuying and the recent decline in the national homeownership rate. Findings indicate that slowdowns in first-time homebuying have played a particularly substantial role in contributing to lowered homeownership rates, particularly for young households and African-American households.
This talk is part of the Center’s ongoing Housing Research Seminar Series, which gives faculty, senior researchers, and graduate students the opportunity to present and discuss current and recent work with a mix of scholars and practitioners.
